July 18 - Seattle; Ballard
Locks
Since I was visiting a friend
in Seattle, we spent as much time relaxing as we did touring. We
spent the afternoon of the first day exploring Seattle's Ballard Locks.
The Locks are also called the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, after the Army
General (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) who developed the locks in the early
1900's. One of my colleagues recommended the site to me because her
father had worked at the locks in Seattle when he was in the army, and
she lived with their family at the site for several years while she was
growing up. (I saw "their" house while I was there.)

Another
thing for the visitors to the Ballard locks to see is the fish ladders.
I have never seen fish ladders before. The viewing windows indoors
were wonderful. They even had pictures of the different fish that
you might see so that you could identify them (it didn't really help me
... they just all looked like fish!)
