July 13 - Yellowstone National Park (Day One)

The first pictures are of some of the roads that I drove as I made my way through Wyoming toward Yellowstone.  There were some things that I thought were certainly photo worthy!

My visit to Yellowstone National Park was spread out over two days.  The rest of the pictures are on the July 14 page.

This is the view from one of the prettiest roads I drove in Wyoming.
This is the road that I was just about to drive on.  :-)  This was very similar to many of the roads that I drove this summer.  It was quite a culture shock for this East Coast girl!
The next two pictures are from my initial drive into the entrance (the Northeast Entrance) into Yellowstone National Park ... my first glimpses.
To the left you'll see one of the pictures that I just happen to like from Yellowstone.  There is nothing specifically special in the shot.  I just like it!  :-)

The pictures that you'll see below are of a scene that I found fascinating.  In 1988, Yellowstone suffered massive forest fires.  Some of the worst in its recorded history.  The fire-fighting approach to the fires was highly controversial:  "Let it Burn".  Since fires are a natural part of nature, and the forest floor needs the remains of a fire to start new growth over again, the fires were allowed to burn.  There are major scars from these fires throughout the park ... even thirteen years later.  In fact, I could swear that as I got closer to the burned trees, I could smell the fire smells still rising from them.  I was amazed.  Here are some images.

Here is where my ignorance begins to set in.  ;-)   The picture to the left and the four pictures below are of the sulfurous hot springs that are all over Yellowstone.  They build walkways that you MUST stay on, as the springs are so hot that they could scald you to death.  I had no idea that such things existed at Yellowstone (I only knew about Old Faithful).  (Duh!)  I also had no idea that any thing sitting in a beautiful part of the forest could smell so badly!!!!!!  YUCK!!  I didn't stand there and look at these hot springs for too long!!
As I got closer to seeing Old Faithful blow, the skies got greyer and greyer.  I didn't even realize that it would make my pictures not so effective ... so, the next four pictures are of Old Faithful, but you can't see it as well as if I had waited for blue skies.
The final two pictures on this page were taken on my drive out of the park.  They are pretty self-explanatory.  There will be more pictures on tomorrow's page (July 14).
