July 11 - South Dakota:
Badlands National Park, Wall Drug, Crazy Horse Memorial
It was neat to find so many
fascinating sites withing a short drive of each other. The only reason
that I didn't really do Mount Rushmore the same day was because of the
rain and the angle of the sun (which did not really make it easy to actually
SEE the monument.) You'll see my Mount Rushmore pictures in the July
12 shots.

The first (rather
large) set of shots is from the Badlands National Park. I will most
honestly tell you that I cannot imagine how an ameteur photographer with
a normal camera can capture the likenesses of the rock formations on film.
You'll just have to take my word for it ... it's an amazing place, full
of God's handiwork unlike anything I've ever seen before. You must
see it some day!! Oh ... and don't be fooled by some of the shots
with the blue skies. It poured rain for the rest of the day.

Here I am!!
This picture was taken by a German gentleman who spoke absolutely no English.
He understood that I wanted a picture of myself, so he pointed to where
he thought I should stand and took the shot. He and his family were
babbling away the whole time in German. After he took the picture,
I answered "danke schon" which really startled them (it's the only thing
I remember from my 2 years of high school German.) They, very enthusiastically
answered, "bitte schon".

| The next two shots are from Wall Drug. I enjoyed Wall Drug no more than I enjoyed the Mitchell Corn Palace (and that's not saying very much!!) I went through a couple of their shops, drank a small cup of free ice water, had lunch, and was glad to leave. | |

And, last but
not least for July 11, pictures from the new Crazy Horse Memorial.
It's a fascinating monument. If you go there at the right time (I
didn't see it), you can catch a glimpse of the blasting ... they do a large
amound of the carving with dynamite.
|
Don't worry ... it will become more clear as you look at more of the pictures. |

The picture directly above is the one that I think shows the best where the sculpture is going. The white sculpture in the foreground is a small-scale model of what should end up as the finished product. I made sure that I put the actual mountain in the background. Can you see the horse's head? |
