Martin Luther King, Jr.
Today is the national holiday set aside to remember the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr. I won't write here about how wonderful Dr. King's work was, nor will I wax eloquent about the legacy that he has left for this country, setting us on the correct course for the future. There are others who have written better pieces than I ever could, and I'll leave you to read what they've written.
Today, I want to write a little bit to encourage you to click on the links below ... and to encourage you to avoid a particular website.
One of the teachers at school distributed a copy of this article from the School Library Journal. I strongly encourage that you read this article. In summary, there is a website at martinlutherking[dot]org (DO NOT go to this website from mine!) that is sponsored by a group that believes just about the exact opposite of the things that Dr. King stood for. I won't name the group or even describe it because I don't want my blog to be searchable on those strings.
Anyway, the top level of that site looks okay at a glance, but if you read through some of the writings, you'll quickly see that it is a hateful website.
What has happened is that when people google the search string "Martin Luther King", they used to get that website as the first entry. It has to do with other websites that link to that website. The way Google does their statistics, they move sites up the list when they're linked to from other websites.
Well, apparently a lot of teachers were using that website to show students that everything on the internet is NOT what it seems. A valuable lesson to teach. BUT, in doing so, they've created a situation where that website has worked its way up the hierarchy.
So, I would like to ask you to follow the links below from my website to other Martin Luther King websites so that the racist website will be pushed farther down the list. And ... please remember Martin Luther King's dream!
