8th Grade Boys!!!!!

Okay, now I don't think it's entirely appropriate for me to discuss specific situations about my students here on a publicly viewable blog. But I have to point out a generality that has always amused me. Eighth grade boys!! Eighth grade boys are often at radically different levels of maturity than other eighth grade boys. When I say maturity, I mean emotional maturity, physical maturity, social maturity, and academic maturity. (By the way ... the same phenomenon is not nearly so drastic for girls!) We will often have an 8th grade boy who is very academically mature yet still looks like a 3rd grader. Or an 8th grade boy with two years worth of facial hair, big muscles and a deep voice ... who cries easily.

The fun thing is when we have had a boy who was very physically immature as an 8th grader, and he comes back to visit us four or five years later and we don't recognize him. This happened one day this week. It cracks me up. The boy who had a high pitched voice, a little boy's build, and a cute little face in my memory showed up in my classroom on Thursday. I didn't recognize him. He told me who he was. I did, most certainly, remember the name. But the face I was looking at was absolutely not the face in my memory. He was still a very nice kid, and I enjoyed talking with him and catching up with him. But I could not, not, match my memory of his face to who I was seeing. Not even after we had talked for about 15 minutes.

Needless to say, he has matured quite nicely. I wish they would ALL come back to visit!!
